Devonport and North Head

Auckland

From fortification site to charming seaside village

Devonport has good reason to tout its historic lineage - its story, and use as a defence fort, is significant.

Its occupation started around 1350AD, when Maori chose the location's three small volcanic mountains - Takapuna, Takarunga and Takaroro - as ideal pa sites.

Remnants of Maori occupation can still be found today, particularly at North Head (or Maunguika, as it was named by Maori) and it is at this historic headland, with commanding views over Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, that you'll also find European defence forts, tunnels, guns and searchlights that make this area a fascinating place to explore (don't forget your torch!).

European settlement in the mid-1800s turned this North Shore village into a bustling coastal locale. Colonial buildings complete with watchtowers and turrets cement the village's seafaring feel. Torpedo Bay and the nearby naval base continue that seaside - and defence - theme.

Devonport is just a short 12-minute ferry ride from Downtown Auckland and is popular for its small cluster of shops which include an eclectic mix of artisans, booksellers, restaurants, cafes and art galleries.

Its beach, with surrounding playground and park areas, is the perfect spot to kick back and relax or settle on the wharf and watch the boats go by.
