Marlborough

A Sea Lover's Sanctuary

A maze of deep coves and secluded bays fringed by native forest, the Marlborough Sounds provide an unspoilt wilderness to enjoy an array of maritime pursuits.

The seaside port of Picton at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, is a good base from which to explore all this region has to offer. You can choose from a variety of activities from fishing, diving, sailing and kayaking, to hiking nature trails.

To see rare birds, dolphins, penguins and seals, join an eco-tour. Sail to the outer Sounds for close encounters with sea birds, seals and endangered species such as the Hector's, Dusky and Bottlenose dolphins.

Explore historic Ship's Cove and admire rare South Island robins on Motuara Island; a well-known bird sanctuary.

Havelock, gateway to the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds, is famous for its Greenshell Mussels. Take the time to savour a plateful at a local café or hop aboard a Greenshell Mussel Cruise.

See how the mussels are grown and harvested, taste fresh steamed mussels straight from the sea, and wash it all down with a glass of Marlborough's renowned Sauvignon Blanc.
