Taranaki Gardens in Paradise Tour

Taranaki

Heaven for garden lovers

There's only one region deserving of the title 'Garden of New Zealand' and that's Taranaki, which boasts almost half of our nationally acclaimed gardens.

Almost everywhere you go; you'll find a different garden style to meander through.

Top of the list is the huge Pukeiti rhododendron garden. Set in lush rainforest, from July until Christmas, this garden puts on a dazzling display of over 10,000 varieties of rhodos.

For a fine example of an urban native garden there's Te Kainga Marire, a site rich in historical and cultural elements; or, if you like a traditional English setting, head to the Jury garden at Tikorangi; a garden that has been maintained and passed down through four generations of one family.

In the heart of New Plymouth, Pukekura Park is an informal public garden. Founded in 1876, with large trees and meandering walks, its bowl is home to the biennial WOMAD Festival and summer concert series.

Other public gardens that should be on your list include Hollard Gardens at Manaia with its heritage plant collection. And, noted for its boardwalk into a fern and nikau filled valley, Ngamamaku at Oakura can be found pressed against the western flank of Egmont National Park.

For a fine collection of exotic deciduous, broadleaf and coniferous trees don't miss Te Popo Gardens in Stratford, where you will also find food and accommodation.
