Rangitoto Island

Rangitoto Island

Auckland

Kayaking, hiking, lava caves, volcanic terrain and fascinating history can all be found in an adventure day-trip to Auckland's youngest volcano, Rangitoto Island. Perhaps the most recognisable volcano in Auckland with its distinctive cone shape, Rangitoto Island offers a great day out for adventure seekers. Kayak (or ferry from downtown Auckland) across the playground that is the Waitemata Harbour to arrive at Rangitoto, home to the world's largest pohutukawa forest; the pohutukawa is known as New Zealand's Christmas tree. Having only emerged from the sea in a great eruption around 600 years ago, remnants of the volcanic explosion are evident in lava flows, caves and giant boulders. Those who want the reward of the stunning view from the summit, but not the vigour of the walk, can purchase tickets to ride on the open-air Rangitoto Explorer train.
