View a 180 million-year-old Petrified Forest…

Otago

Discover an ancient geological phenomenon of international significance at Curio Bay. The Petrified Forest features fossilised trees similar to Kauri and Matai lying embedded on coastal bedrock - the remnants of a 180 million-year-old Jurassic age forest. It is one of the world’s most extensive and least disturbed examples. The rock formations are best viewed at low tide when they are most exposed. Interpretation panels offer an informative history of the site at the top of a viewing platform and stairs lead down to the rocks to allow for a closer examination. The crashing waves and sheer cliffs surrounding the area are an impressive backdrop to this historic spot.
