Two things you need to know about Hawke's Bay:
Firstly: no matter where you are in this east coast location, chances are theres a wicked view just around the corner.
And secondly: it's the Hawkes Bay way to make the most of its coastal temperatures, in particular its super-sized sunshine hours.
With low rainfall and an average of 2,200 sunshine hours each year, it's no surprise that Hawke's Bay has become a predominant producer of fine wine, gourmet food and epicurean delights in this country.
In total, there are 75 wineries in the region (34 of which open their cellar doors to the public). A number of these facilities also offer alfresco or restaurant dining.
Bus tours, bike tours and self-drive (designated driver please!) options should start with a flick through a Wine Trail Map to choose the vineyards you'd like to visit.
The traditional farmers' market in Hastings will give you a true idea of just how many different food and speciality producers there are in this region. Expect trestle tables bulging with organic fruits and vegetables, coffee, chocolates, cheese, olives, gourmet meats, oils, pastes - even lavender oils, soap and flowers.
And the best time to taste-test Hawke's Bay's yield? In early February, when the Harvest Festival is in full swing.
