Don't expect fabulous shopping or nightlife — this idyllic town is famous for its surf.
Raglan, with its stunning beaches, is also renowned for its 'alternative' community and bohemian lifestyle.
To enjoy the surf, you don't even need to take your own gear. Surfboards, boogie boards, wetsuits and flippers can be rented year-round.
If you not into surfing, you'll still enjoy watching the action on the pumping breaks that have hosted many international surfing championships.
If you decide to join in the action, then there's a local surfing school with beginners' lessons or advanced courses on beautiful Ngrunui Beach. A surfing and spa retreat at Whale Bay is dedicated to women surfers.
Other activities around Raglan include guided kayaking tours on the harbour, and an 18-hole golf course with an honesty box for the green fees (try to avoid hitting the sheep). Horse riding treks up Mt Kariori — the sleeping lady overlooking Raglan — will reward you with stunning Tasman ocean views.
Leave time to sit back and take in the coastal town atmosphere visiting artist studios, relaxing at a café, or resting up on the front terrace of the historic Harbourview Hotel in the main street.
