About Tiritiri Matangi Island Reserve

Tiritiri Matangi is considered one of the most successful conservation projects in the world. Lying 4km off the Whangaparaoa Peninsula north of Auckland, the open sanctuary is home to scores of rare and endangered species, including the saddleback, Little Spotted Kiwi, and the tuatara. All pests have been successfully eradicated, and the land, which was once used for farming, has been replanted with native trees.

Visitors are welcome to explore this peaceful island and observe its rare wildlife, listen to the enchanting birdsong, swim and snorkel on Hobbs Beach, or partake in a guided walk.
