A place of unspoiled beauty, the Ruapehu region has three active volcanoes; Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. Winding its way from the Tongariro mountains to the Tasman Sea is the country's longest navigable river, the Whanganui. It is possible to explore the wild scenery on foot, on skis or from the roaring rapids of a river. Mt Ruapehu has the popular and largest commercial ski fields of Whakapapa, Turoa and Tukino, and incorporates the majority of the Tongariro and Whanganui National Parks. Accommodation available in the region includes fully catered lodges, self-catering chalets, lodges and motels, bed & breakfast, and holiday parks with campervan and campsites.
