The red beacon of Uluru, or Ayers Rock stands 348 metres above earth and reaches twice that below, revealing only part of its undulating beauty.

Flat desert plains highlight its overwhelming size, and visitors feel dwarfed as they walk the 9.4km trail around Uluru's base. For the local Aboriginal people, the Anangu, the World Heritage Site holds a special significance. They regard Uluru as a sacred place and will tell you dreamtime stories about the rock's creation many thousands of years ago.

Join other sleepy-eyed travellers at dawn and dusk, as the sun casts a rainbow of reds and purples across the icon's craggy face. By night, temperatures drop and a pitch-black sky is blanketed in a sea of piercingly white stars. Crickets sing you to sleep as the contortions of red rock cool for another day.
