Whether you jump in a kayak or strap your tent to your back and take the family for a hike along the Queen Charlotte Track, exploring the Marlborough Sounds always offers rich rewards. Sailing, fishing, diving, sea kayaking and swimming with dolphins are among the maritime pursuits that abound in this natural playground. If a more laid-back holiday appeals, you can enjoy the maze of tranquil coves fringed by native forest from a cruise boat.
No matter where you end up as the sun sets, a glass of Marlborough's renowned sauvignon blanc is the perfect way to wind down.
The outdoor theme continues in the Nelson region, with no fewer than three national parks to explore here. With its gorgeous golden beaches, turquoise waters and towering granite cliffs, the Abel Tasman National Park is the smallest and the most visited. Explore it by kayak, mountain bike, boat cruise or on foot - the Abel Tasman Coast Track is a great way to discover the park's coastal gems. The wilderness of the Kahurangi National Park and the beautiful alpine lakes of the Nelson Lakes National Park are also worthy of a family holiday away from the crowds.
Dinner is sorted in Nelson with the Kiwi classic - a steaming takeaway parcel of fish 'n' chips - best enjoyed on a blanket at one of Nelson's many picnic spots. Nelson city is home to the largest fishing port in Australasia, so it follows that seafood is always on the menu and always fresh.

For a Kiwi holiday that covers all the bases, Nelson should top the list. From a rejuvenating escape from the daily grind to an action-packed adventure, Nelson caters to visitors of all aspirations.
With more sunshine hours than almost anywhere else in the country, its dazzling white-sand and golden-sand beaches are prime spots for a summer holiday.
The region is famous for its seafood, horticulture and fruit growing, and these ingredients, combined with local wines, create delectable cuisine. Taste the offerings at a local restaurant or winery here, or head straight to the source at one of the local farmers' markets.
Nelson is renowned for its art and craft, so be sure to pay a visit to the workshop of a local painter, sculptor, fashion designer, glass blower or jeweller, then pick up something special as a souvenir of your holiday.
If it's action and adventure you want, the Nelson region can deliver in that department too. Zip around on 4WD bikes, take a helicopter ride, explore the area by kayak, fly like a bird on the Skywire (the world's longest flying fox), or have a go at kite surfing - and that's only the start. The region is also making a name for itself in the mountain-biking department.
Family-friendly activities abound in Nelson. Take the kids to the zoo, or for a horse ride; there's plenty to entertain them here. A great idea is to hire bikes and roam around Nelson at your leisure, or hit the beaches for some free fun in the sun - check out Tahunanui Beach and Rabbit Island. It's also worth wandering around Nelson's urban centre and waterfront; look out for the heritage trail and public art walks.
