Spring in this region is full of promise. Warmer weather is on the way, the lakes, rivers and streams are soon to re-open for fishing, and tulips are blooming all over the city. Rotorua has won New Zealand’s Most Beautiful City award five times, and it's easy to see why.

As spring melts into summer, the lakes come alive with the sounds of family fun. Kids splash around in the shallows, boats zip around with water skiers or wake boarders in tow, and laughing groups scatter themselves around sun-soaked lake beaches fringed by pohutukawa trees.

With all this on offer, Rotorua is an ideal spot for holidays the whole family will treasure; spend the long, hot days swimming and boating, winding up with a twilight barbecue near the lake edge.

Rotorua lakes

Rotorua is a fabulous natural playground; an ideal spot for family holidays whatever the season. The possibilities for fun and adventure are endless, and there's something for all the family. The region's 14 lakes are perfect for fishing, boating, kayaking and other aquatic activities. Each lake is spectacular in its own way. Campsites perfect for family escapes are dotted around the region.

Mountain biking

Mountain biking is one of the best ways to discover Rotorua's stunning scenery and Whakarewarewa Forest, just minutes from the city centre, provides the perfect introduction. A 288ha section of the Whakarewarewa Forest known as The Redwoods is dedicated to recreation, and its gentle beginner trails provide a relaxing ride in the forest. The forest is free to the public all year round.

Adventure

Rotorua is renowned for this and other adventure activities and is home to many world-firsts. Roll downhill in the world-famous Zorb, try some thrilling 360-degree spins in a jet boat, or take the kids luging down Mt Ngongotaha, the screams of laughter from other riders ringing in your ears.

Walking

Rotorua has myriad walking tracks that offer some of New Zealand’s best scenery. Hike 1111m to the summit of Mt Tarawera and admire the breathtaking views, walk through native bush around the Blue Lake or through wetlands at Okareka, or sample any of the walks around Lake Tarawera, where highlights include Tarawera Falls and traditional Maori paintings on a rock face at Tarawera Orchard.

Geothermal and spa

Rotorua is, as most New Zealanders will know, renowned for its geothermal activity. Billowing steam and the distinct aroma of sulphur greets visitors on arrival. Both come from bubbling mud pools and spectacular geysers that were discovered by Europeans in the 1880s. This volcanic activity is one of Rotorua's biggest draw cards, with Whakarewarewa, Waimangu Valley, Wai-o-Tapu and Hell's Gate the main thermal areas.
