The Waitaki District stretches from the glacier-fed Waitaki River, in the north, southwards along the sprawling north Otago coastline to the gold-mining town of Palmerston and inland up the mighty Waitaki Valley to Ohau and Omarama, with their spectacular vistas of the Southern Alps.

Oamaru

Oamaru - the heart of the Waitaki District - will transport you to a time gone by when penny-farthing cycles once raced the streets. Then stroll around Oamaru's famous Historic Precinct, which contains a magnificent collection of Oamaru's majestic whitestone buildings, built in the 1870s. The precinct was once the business hub, with banks, hotels, grain and wool stores adjacent to the Oamaru harbour. Today it is being revitalised with shops and galleries; this is a must-see for all visitors.

Waitaki District

The Waitaki District stretches from the glacier-fed Waitaki River in the north and along the sprawling north Otago coastline to the south. It spans the gold-mining town of Palmerston and inland, up the mighty Waitaki Valley, to Ohau and Omarama near the spectacular Southern Alps.

Moeraki Boulders

The district is also well known for its ecotourism and the famous Moeraki Boulders – a must see attraction. Visit off-the-beaten-track gems like Elephant Rocks, Maori Rock Art, Clay Cliffs, Oceana Gold and Totara Estate – where the first shipment of frozen meat was exported to England in 1882.

Blue Penguin colony

Take a day tour to the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony and view these birds in their natural environment. Sit right next to the Pacific Ocean and be captivated by nature – ecotourism at its best.
