Fresh from the 2012 New School of Music Jazz Festival in Wellington, this Concert features two highly acclaimed international jazz superstars, Dick Oatts (Thad Jones - Mel Lewis, Vanguard Orchestra) and Bennie Maupin (Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and Herbie Hancock's Headhunters), the highly acclaimed Auckland Jazz Orchestra, pianist Phil Broadhurst, flutist Trudy Lile and guitarist Neil Watson.
After the sell out concert of the last two years, once again this will be 'the' major jazz event in Auckland for 2012. It will be an extraordinary concert that jazz fans will not want to miss!
The Auckland Jazz Orchestra is a big band featuring many of Auckland's finest musicians playing original NZ compositions and arrangements. This big band draws from a collective of Auckland’s best musicians exploring the potential of a Big Band. Founding member Mike Booth says.. “We have an opportunity to take a musical legacy and transform it through the ...New Zealand experience into a locally based creative force. Big Band Jazz is a powerful art form, muscular and hard swinging, sometimes bluesy and boisterous, but also capable of lush harmonies and evocative beauty…”
Phil Broadhurst is one of New Zealand's leading jazz artists and holds the position of Head of Jazz studies at The NZ School of Music, Massey University, Albany.
In 2001 he became the first jazz musician to be awarded the MNZM for services to jazz. Three times winner of the “Jazz Record Of The Year” award he is also a well-known broadcaster, presenting his own programme “The Art Of Jazz” weekly on Concert FM. Phil played regularly at Auckland’s premiere jazz venue, the London Bar, for many years. His numerous credits include work in the U.S., U.K. and other foreign parts, and collaborations with many jazz greats visiting N.Z., including Johnny Griffin, Ronnie Scott, and Scott Hamilton. Australia. Phil completed a Master’s degree in the life and music of French jazz pianist Michel Petrucciani, and in 2011 released an album of arrangements and originals based on his music - Delayed Reaction on the IA Rattle label.
Trudy Lile (Flute) a jazz flutist and vocalist based in Auckland, New Zealand. Well known for her enthusiastic and energetic performances, she has performed at Jazz Festivals around New Zealand and Australia with her band Mojave and as one of The Jazz Divas. She has also recorded and performed with The Rodger Fox Big Band, Black Sand Diva, Whirimako Black, Oquestra Amadeus, Ishtar, King Kapisi, and Many Hands. As well as a busy teaching schedule at New Zealand School of Music Albany campus, Trudy was the first jazz flutist in New Zealand to complete her Masters of Music in jazz performance. Trudy has released two albums; ‘Ristretto’ in July 2004 was described by New Zealand Musician Magazine as “one of the best albums I’ve heard this year.” 'Well Dressed Standards' was released in March 2009 and is available on itunes, CDbaby, Digirama, and Amplifier.co.nz.
Guitarist Neil Watson has been working as a professional freelance musician since 1996. Over the last ten years Neil has performed, recorded and worked with many national and international artists and musicians, such as Tim Finn, Anika Moa, Michael Brecker, Randy Crawford, Des O’Connor, John Rowles, Frank Bennett, Greg Bisonnett, Kevin Mahogany, The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and The Rodger Fox Big Band. Neil has performed internationally in Sydney, Los Angeles, San Francisco, as well as at jazz festivals such as Monterey, IJAE and Noumea. He has made numerous appearances on recordings including with The Rodger Fox Big Band, The Grand Central Band, and released his debut album “Unification” in 2001. He currently teaches guitar at New Zealand School of Music Albany campus, Auckland University and at MAINZ in Auckland.
