If you come to Akaroa looking for fun, excitement or a dose of adrenalin, you certainly won't leave disappointed. There's bound to be aquatic, family or thrilling activities either here or not too far away, from marine mammal encounters and eco-tourism adventures to cruises and jet-boat rides. New Zealand is the 'Adventure Capital of the World', so adrenalin-pumping action is found all over the country. Jet boating and white-water rafting are exhilarating ways to check out the country's crystal-clear rivers and magic scenery. If you would rather stay dry then there's a myriad of land and air-based activities on offer too. The brave can try bungy jumping, the slightly less courageous can enjoy a tandem hang-glide or parapent, or for the ultimate thrill there is the free-fall skydive. Plus, abseiling or exploring the captivating cave systems that riddle both the North and South Islands should definitely be on your to-do list.

Eighty-five kilometres southeast of Christchurch and perched on the edge of a deep volcanic harbour
is the picturesque village of Akaroa. The journey from Christchurch takes 1.5 hours and includes
some spectacular views. Akaroa has Maori, French and British heritage and is considered one of
Canterbury's first established townships. The foreshore is lined with cafes, restaurants, art
galleries and boutique shops. There are also open gardens and a range of accommodation options.
Visitors can swim with the rare Hector's dolphins, see the white-flippered and yellow-eyed penguins,
view New Zealand's fur seal colony, or cruise the harbour. The area is a popular destination for a
variety of activities including walking and tramping, swimming, surfing, sailing, horse trekking,
fishing, four-wheel bike riding, kayaking and mountain biking. At a more leisurely pace, you can
sample local produce at the cheese factory. Take the time to visit the Akaroa and Okains Bay museum
that incorporate some of the oldest buildings in the Canterbury region.
