With a wide range of nightclubs, restaurants, bars, live music and theatre, our country's nightlife offers something for most age groups (the legal drinking age is 18). Live bands are popular with younger pub-goers and jazz venues attract a more mature audience. Nightclubs vary in music genres, and the diversity of quality live theatre ensures all interests are catered for. If you enjoy a punt or two, then try your luck at a casino, where you'll find a range of gaming tables and machines (20 is the minimum age for entry). If you're a smoker, then please note that there is a smoking ban inside all restaurants, casinos, pubs, bars and nightclubs, although provision is made outside of these establishments for smokers.

Eighty-five kilometres southeast of Christchurch and perched on the edge of a deep volcanic harbour
is the picturesque village of Akaroa. The journey from Christchurch takes 1.5 hours and includes
some spectacular views. Akaroa has Maori, French and British heritage and is considered one of
Canterbury's first established townships. The foreshore is lined with cafes, restaurants, art
galleries and boutique shops. There are also open gardens and a range of accommodation options.
Visitors can swim with the rare Hector's dolphins, see the white-flippered and yellow-eyed penguins,
view New Zealand's fur seal colony, or cruise the harbour. The area is a popular destination for a
variety of activities including walking and tramping, swimming, surfing, sailing, horse trekking,
fishing, four-wheel bike riding, kayaking and mountain biking. At a more leisurely pace, you can
sample local produce at the cheese factory. Take the time to visit the Akaroa and Okains Bay museum
that incorporate some of the oldest buildings in the Canterbury region.
