Town Info

Mount Cook Accommodation. If you are looking for comprehensive travel information for Mount Cook Accommodation including Hotels, Motels (Self-Contained), Bed and Breakfast, Holiday Parks, Backpackers and Apartments, you will find it here on AA Travel.

New Zealand is fortunate enough to have a wide variety of accommodation options to choose from. Whatever standard you seek, there is a price and quality to suit your needs. Accommodation is available in abundance at the major tourist locations, but also scattered around off-the-beaten-track places - wherever you go, accommodation is never too far away. One thing to note about accommodation in Mount Cook is that you should be sure to book early for peak holiday times, for instance over the Christmas holidays and long weekends. During these times accommodation is often booked out well in advance.

Aoraki/Mt Cook Village sits below majestic Aoraki/Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest peak. Temperatures can be extreme, reaching more than 30°C in the summer and plummeting to below -10°C in winter.

Framed by rugged, spectacular mountainscapes, Aoraki/Mt Cook Village is perfectly positioned to take advantage of some very spectacular scenery. There are 140 peaks over 2000m high in the Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, including Aoraki/Mt Cook at 3754m.

The region provided the ideal training ground for the great Sir Edmund Hillary to hone his climbing skills before becoming the first person to reach the summit of Mt Everest.

A World Heritage site, Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park covers over 70,000ha of alpine scenery preserved in its natural state.

You can enjoy tussock grassland, huge river valleys, high country, lakes and mountains by walking, tramping (guides are available), by ski plane or helicopter. Look out for native flowers while you're in the park; there are over 750 different varieties, including the famous Mount Cook Lily, the largest buttercup in the world.

Other activities include climbing, thar (goat-like mammal) hunting, 4WD safaris and glacier skiing.

The visitor's centre at Aoraki/Mt Cook Village will advise you of the wide range of activities available throughout the year. In the summer months, park staff arrange informal and friendly guided walks during the day, and evening lectures on birds, ski mountaineering and other topics.

Southwest of Aoraki/Mount Cook, Lake Pukaki is an upper part of the Waitaki hydroelectric scheme. Fed by the Tasman and Hooker Rivers, the opaqueness of the water is the result of glacier-ground rock particles. An absolutely splendid view of Aoraki/Mt Cook can be seen from the lookout of the dam at the south end of the lake.

A great way to view the alpine scenery is to take the renowned grand traverse scenic flight around the Aoraki/Mt Cook and Westland National Parks from Glentanner. One spectacle after another will unfold as you cross the Murchison and Tasman Glaciers, the Main Divide, Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers and Aoraki/Mount Cook. The flight takes around 50 minutes.

As a tourist town, Aoraki/Mt Cook has a wide range of accommodation options from luxury hotels to budget backpacker lodges, with self-catering motels and chalets in between. Pet-friendly accommodation may be available by arrangement.
