lakes for fishing and water sports, and native forests for exploring. Try
delicious gourmet delights, visit an art or craft studio, go shopping,
check out a Maori cultural performance or take advantage of our exciting
range of events. And that's just the beginning!
Arthur's Pass connects Canterbury and Westland. The beautiful scenery of the neighbouring Arthur's
Pass National Park has varied vegetation and supports many native birds, including the clowning kea
(mountain parrot). There are many fine walks starting from Arthur's Pass village, including the
Bealey Valley, Bridal Veil Walk, Devil's Punchbowl Falls and Dobson nature walk. Other activities
are camping, climbing, hunting and skiing. The TranzAlpine train journey from Christchurch to
Greymouth stops at Arthur's Pass. The Otira rail tunnel that runs for 8.5km beneath the pass and the
new viaduct (as well as the rock/debris and the Reid Falls chutes that pass over the highway) are
monumental feats of engineering. The hotel and backpackers offers a bar and restaurant.
