Ashburton District stretches from the majestic Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by beautiful braided rivers and high country lakes.

The Ashburton township is well known for its beautiful parks and gardens, and one of the finest examples is the Ashburton Domain with 37.5 hectares of botanic gardens.

When the first European pioneers arrived in Ashburton, the landscape was an inhospitable semi-desert. Now, thanks to the settlers' perserverance with irrigation schemes, Ashburton is an attractive town with stately trees, elegant gardens and fertile farmland.

Ideally located just one hour's drive south of Christchurch on SH 1, Ashburton is the perfect base for a holiday or a great place to break your journey if you're heading farther south. The town's excellent car parking facilities make it easy to stop and enjoy the high quality shops, cafes and restaurants, museums and art gallery. Local craft galleries are also worth a look.

Ashburton also offers a number of heritage attractions including the Ashburton Vintage Car Museum; the Plains Railway and Historical Village featuring a working vintage railway; and the Lynn Historical Woodworking Trust (view one of the biggest collections of lathes in the world).

The Ashburton Aviation Museum features a huge collection of planes from yesteryear as well as displays of the time it spent as an air force training base during World War II.

Numerous sporting facilities are available in Ashburton, including a heated swimming pool, international-standard hockey pitch, superb tennis courts, challenging golf courses and Lake Hood, a popular spot for all types of recreational water activities.

The wider Ashburton area has a range of activities from golf, skiing and fishing in superb rivers full of salmon and sea-run trout to walkways, heritage and adventure.
