Cape Reinga
This lonely lighthouse overlooks the tumultuous meeting of the
Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean at Cape Reinga. At the northernmost tip of the Cape is a pohutukawa
tree, believed to be over 800 years old. From this tree, the spirits of Maori deceased leap into the
ocean to return to the ancestral homeland of Hawaiiki. Accommodation is available at Ahipara,
Awanui, Coopers Beach and the Doubtless Bay area, and Houhora Harbour/Houhora Heads and are
well-placed for visiting Cape Reinga and the Bay of Islands. Options include self-catering (motels),
some beachfront; apartments, budget cabins and holiday parks (campsites and campervans) and budget
backpackers. Bed & breakfast options are available in some towns. Seasonal, group and senior citizen
discounts may be available at some establishments.
