Carterton was established in 1857 to house workers building the road between Greytown and Masterton.
It is the main entry point to the Tararua Ranges. Access to the ranges is provided via Mt Holdsworth
with unique New Zealand forest and bird life. Antique shops, local crafts, mushrooms, hot-air
ballooning and an animal park are some of the attractions available in the district. Visit the paua
shell factory and view the crafting of quality jewellery and gifts.
