Catlins Coast
is full of wonderful things to see and do, with something for everyone.
If it's not here, you won't have to travel far to find it. As this
country is known as the 'Adventure Capital of the World', you can
always find thrills of every kind nearby, from bungy jumping and
skydiving to jet boating and white-water rafting. Our 14 national parks
are perfect for tramping, where spectacular scenery abounds. Our
geothermal hotspots provide natural thermal pools, shooting geysers and
bubbling mud pools, while our incredible wildlife is a must-see for
animal lovers. There are plenty of picturesque beaches for swimming,
surfing or relaxing, mountain ranges for skiing and snowboarding, glassy
lakes for fishing and water sports, and native forests for exploring. Try
delicious gourmet delights, visit an art or craft studio, go shopping,
check out a Maori cultural performance or take advantage of our exciting
range of events. And that's just the beginning!
The Southern Scenic Route transects the area along the east coast providing travellers with the
opportunity to experience the beauty of the landscape and bountiful wildlife of the untamed
coastline. From Balclutha you travel south along the well-marked route. Kaka Point is a seaside
village on the way to the spectacular Nugget Point Lighthouse. Viewing of yellow-eyed penguins here
is best early morning and late evening over the summer period. Fur seals can be seen at the Nuggets
along with many sea birds, and sea lions can be observed at Cannibal and Surat Bays. Please do not
disturb the wildlife. From Nugget Point travel on to Owaka, which is a rural service town. Allow
plenty of time to see the sights along the way. Not to be missed are waterfalls, Jack's Blowhole,
spectacular beaches, a range of walks and tracks, magnificent forest and the famous Cathedral Caves
(viewing at low tide only), and the fossilised forest at Curio Bay. Many roads to places of interest
are gravel (loose metal).
