Town Info

Christchurch Accommodation New Zealand - AA Travel Guide. If you are looking for comprehensive travel information for Christchurch Accommodation including Hotels, Motels (Self-Contained), Bed and Breakfast, Holiday Parks, Backpackers and Apartments, you will find it here on AA Travel.

New Zealand is fortunate enough to have a wide variety of accommodation options to choose from. Whatever standard you seek, there is a price and quality to suit your needs. Accommodation is available in abundance at the major tourist locations, but also scattered around off-the-beaten-track places - wherever you go, accommodation is never too far away. One thing to note about accommodation in Christchurch is that you should be sure to book early for peak holiday times, for instance over the Christmas holidays and long weekends. During these times accommodation is often booked out well in advance.

Christchurch is well on the way to recovery after the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, and much of the city retains its distinctively attractive mix of old and new.

Although the historic Christchurch Cathedral was damaged by the 2011 earthquake, and the Christchurch Art Gallery remains closed, many other important cultural icons continue to delight visitors. Enjoy the meandering River Avon, historic churches and buildings, museums, galleries, parks and gardens.

You can base yourself in Christchurch and make forays into the Canterbury District, including Banks Peninsula and along the scenically gifted State Highway 72, which is known as the Inland Scenic Route. For your stay in Christchurch, choose from a wide variety of accommodation in the city and throughout the suburbs.

If you're looking for a fun experience, visit the highly regarded Court Theatre - complete with exciting new premises. The Court Theatre has a proud history in the city, having provided productions ranging from New Zealand shows to international classics for 40 years.

Formerly based in the Arts Centre, the company was forced to find a new home after the 22 February 2011 earthquake. Now settled into a converted grain store in Addington, the theatre has continued to stage productions for adults and children. The theatre is home to New Zealand's longest running comedy show, Scared Scriptless.

As well as the new theatre, Addington boasts an entirely redeveloped and refreshed post-earthquake scene of bars, cafes, the new AMI Stadium and Horncastle Arena. Also in the area is the Addington Raceway, which along with the New Zealand Cup and Show Week has regular race meetings, and is ideal for a great day or night out for visitors to Christchurch.

Another theatre that has made a welcome return after the earthquakes is the Isaac Theatre Royal in Gloucester Street. This 106-year-old Grand Old Lady of New Zealand theatre was closed for nearly four years and has undergone a $40 million rebuild and restoration project.

There are luxury hotels, apartments, motor lodges, bed & breakfasts and self-catering motels, as well as more modest establishments. Select from backpacker lodges, a youth hostel, holiday parks and campgrounds, offering budget accommodation, campervan and campsites. Pet-friendly accommodation may be available by arrangement.
