Town Info

Christchurch Motels (Self-Contained) - Accommodation. If you are looking for comprehensive travel information for Christchurch Motels (Self-Contained) including Luxury Motel, Motel, Motor Lodge and Self-Catered, you will find it here on AA Travel.

Motel accommodation is great for independent travellers. If you like to have the option of cooking your own meals, doing your own laundry and having the essential comforts of a home while staying in Christchurch, motels are the best form of accommodation. There is a huge variety of motels all around the country, from the top of the North Island to Stewart Island, and a range of prices to suit most budgets. You'll find motels in main cities, along main travelling routes and near popular tourist attractions, as well as in off-the-beaten-track scenic locations. Most motel units have self-catering facilities with fully equipped kitchens. They also have a phone, TV, tea and coffee-making facilities and a private bathroom. They have made-up beds with all bedding supplied, and car parking. Breakfast (at an additional cost) can usually be ordered the previous night for delivery to the unit if required.

Christchurch is well on the way to recovery after the devastating earthquakes of 2010/11, and much of the city retains its distinctively attractive mix of heritage and contemporary urbanity. Though the historic Christchurch Cathedral was damaged by the 2011 earthquake, and the Christchurch Art Gallery remains closed, many other important cultural icons remain. Enjoy the meandering River Avon, historic churches and buildings, museums, galleries, parks and gardens.

You can base yourself in Christchurch and make forays into the Canterbury District, including Banks Peninsula and along the scenically gifted State Highway 72, which is known as the Inland Scenic Route. For your stay in Christchurch, choose from a wide variety of accommodation in the city and throughout the suburbs.

If you're looking for a fun experience, visit the highly regarded Court Theatre - complete with exciting new premises. The Court Theatre has a proud history in the city, having provided productions ranging from New Zealand shows to international classics for 40 years.

Formerly based in the Arts Centre, the company was forced to find a new home after the 22 February 2011 earthquake. Now settled into a converted grain store in Addington, the theatre has continued to stage productions for adults and children. The theatre is home to New Zealand's longest running comedy show, Scared Scriptless.

As well as the new theatre, Addington boasts an entirely redeveloped and refreshed post-earthquake scene of bars, cafes, the new AMI Stadium and Horncastle Arena. Also in the area is the Addington Raceway, which along with the New Zealand Cup and Show Week has regular race meetings, and is ideal for a great day or night out for visitors to Christchurch.

Another theatre that has made a welcome return after the earthquakes is the Isaac Theatre Royal in Gloucester Street. This 106-year-old 'Grand Old Lady' of New Zealand theatre was closed for nearly four years and has undergone a $40 million rebuild and restoration project.

There are luxury hotels, apartments, motor lodges, bed & breakfasts and self-catering motels, as well as the more modest or budget establishments. Select from backpacker lodges, a youth hostel, holiday parks and campgrounds, offering budget accommodation, campervan and campsites. Pet-friendly accommodation may be available by arrangement.
