Christchurch
is full of wonderful things to see and do, with something for everyone.
If it's not here, you won't have to travel far to find it. As this
country is known as the 'Adventure Capital of the World', you can
always find thrills of every kind nearby, from bungy jumping and
skydiving to jet boating and white-water rafting. Our 14 national parks
are perfect for tramping, where spectacular scenery abounds. Our
geothermal hotspots provide natural thermal pools, shooting geysers and
bubbling mud pools, while our incredible wildlife is a must-see for
animal lovers. There are plenty of picturesque beaches for swimming,
surfing or relaxing, mountain ranges for skiing and snowboarding, glassy
lakes for fishing and water sports, and native forests for exploring. Try
delicious gourmet delights, visit an art or craft studio, go shopping,
check out a Maori cultural performance or take advantage of our exciting
range of events. And that's just the beginning!
Known as the Garden City, Christchurch offers a superb balance between the historic and the
contemporary - where early settlers' architecture lends a surreal charm to a thriving, exciting,
bustling city.
Christchurch is best characterised as a place with colour, atmosphere and
world-class attractions such as the Christchurch Gondola, the unique International Antarctic Centre,
and the brand new Christchurch Art Gallery - a testament to the creative and cultural foundations
upon which it rests. All of this is set against the backdrop of Hagley Park, more than 150 hectares
(395 acres) of beautiful inner-city parkland.
It is a relaxed lifestyle - the shopping is
excellent and restaurants provide a multi-ethnic culinary mix topped off with a uniquely New Zealand
flavour. From great-tasting food to festivals, Christchurch and the surrounding Canterbury region
provide a number of unique events and festivals - the Festival of Romance, the International Buskers
Festival, Showtime Canterbury, and the Winter Carnival to name a few. Most of the city's attractions
are accessible by foot or tram.
With this level of activity it is probably no surprise that
Christchurch is a sought-after conference and convention venue. It is home to one of New Zealand's
finest purpose-built conference centres, the Christchurch Convention Centre, which is linked by
airbridge to the city's main performing arts centre, the Christchurch Town Hall. The convention
centre can cater for gatherings from 10 to 2500 people, and there is a superb range of accommodation
within walking distance.
