A township at the mouth of the Aorere River on the shoreline of Golden Bay, Collingwood is the
starting point for a fine drive up the Aorere Valley and for a walking trip, via the valley and the
Heaphy Track over the western ranges, to the mouth of the Heaphy River and down the West Coast to
Karamea. Just outside Collingwood, 8km to the southwest at Rockville, are the Te Anaroa Caves and a
small private museum displaying a collection of local minerals, shells, birds and Maori artefacts.
Collingwood can also be one of the starting points for a trip to Farewell Spit, one of the longest
natural sandbars in the world and a wetland of international importance. The tavern has dining
facilities.
