Once a gold-mining and timber town, Coromandel township has many heritage buildings and is a haven for conservationists, craftspeople and artists, as well as a popular destination for boaties. The mussel and oyster farms and many small islands are popular for sightseeing and fishing charters. Several multisport events, including the triathlon Moehau Man, start in Coromandel. There are a variety of restaurants and cafés. At local bays, swimming and picnicking are pleasant pursuits as is fishing on the rocky shoreline. Make sure you visit the narrow gauge railway when in Coromandel, as well as the pottery on the same site. The historic pub is worth a visit, as they specialise in fishing trips!
