Darfield is situated 45km west of Christchurch and is part of the Canterbury plains just before they disappear into the distant foothills of the majestic Southern Alps.

Located on the Canterbury Plains, Darfield is a farming community and a stop for the TranzAlpine railway.

A few kilometres north of the town is the Waimakariri River, where you can go trout and salmon fishing - just remember to get your trout fishing licence first. Similarly, Rakaia River to the south is also a great place to get out your rod and lure.

Jet-boating is popular on both rivers, where drivers can test their skills on the braids created by water coming off the mountains. There are commercial operators on the rivers, which offer an exhilarating ride - one that you are sure to never forget!
