Eating out can be one of the highlights of a holiday in Dunedin District. You can expect to find wonderful examples of edible excellence throughout the country, and the high standard of food offered by cafes and restaurants can be attributed to an unlimited supply of fresh, quality ingredients. The cuisine style known as Pacific Rim is New Zealand's point of difference. Pacific Rim blends the flavours of South East Asia, the Pacific and Japan. Seafood, the traditional Maori hangi (an earth oven), fresh fruit and locally produced venison and beef are just a selection of the must-try cuisine on offer. Combine this with world-class locally made wines and you have a memorable dining experience.

Dunedin is the capital of Otago, a region that once swarmed with gold prospectors and was New
Zealand's largest city in the mid-Victorian era. It is now renowned as the country's capital of
eco-tourism and heritage, a city of distinguished architecture and amazing wildlife. Dunedin is also
a city of culture and learning, housing our first and largest university (Otago), a selection of
fine art galleries, museums and libraries and an eclectic array of boutique fashion design studios.
A temperate climate (mild summers and cool winters) supports fine gardens and the city is famous for
its rhododendrons. It also has a number of good swimming and surfing beaches, and much natural
beauty on the Otago Peninsula, home to a variety of bird life, including rare yellow-eyed penguins
and the world's only mainland royal albatross colony.
