Taking advantage of Foxton’s backpacker options is a great way to socialise before moving on and exploring the entire country on a budget. Backpacker accommodation is friendly, communal and reliable. They are places where, usually, young travellers congregate and often make friends with people of different nationalities. It’s the most fun way to discover everything this country has to offer and meet like-minded travellers. New Zealand backpacker accommodation is considered to be of a consistently high quality. Foxton: The ‘Birthplace of the Manawatu’ was the original river port for the area supporting a local flax industry. The town supports a number of tourist attractions including a horse-drawn tram, ‘De Molen’ (Dutch windmill), Mavtech – audio and visual museum, Flax Stripper Museum, murals, printery, while the beach area offers safe swimming, boating, sailing and fishing facilities. The Manawatu River estuary has international RAMSAR status in respect of the birdlife. A variety of restaurants and other food facilities are available. The selection of accommodation in the area includes a bed and breakfast, self-catering motels, hotels and motor camps; pet-friendly accommodation may be available by arrangement.
