Town Info

Gisborne Backpackers - Accommodation. If you are looking for comprehensive travel information for Gisborne Backpackers, you will find it here on AA Travel.

Taking advantage of Gisborne's backpacker options is a great way to socialise before moving on and exploring the entire country on a budget. Backpacker accommodation is friendly, communal and reliable. They are places where, usually, young travellers congregate and often make friends with people of different nationalities. It's the most fun way to discover everything this country has to offer and meet like-minded travellers. New Zealand backpacker accommodation is considered to be of a consistently high quality. Most backpacker accommodation throughout the country offers a mixture of shared rooms (dormitories), as well as single, twin or double rooms for a higher (but still relatively cheap) cost. The facilities usually consist of a communal kitchen and bathroom, and a coin-operated laundry, although this does vary - many also have internet access, bars and TV lounges. Long-term rates are usually offered for those planning to stay awhile.

Built in a casual sprawl from the edge of the ocean, Gisborne is the first city in the world to
greet the sun each morning. It's also the country's Chardonnay Capital - the local wineries have
become a major visitor attraction for Gisborne. Captain Cook first set foot here in 1769, and
European settlement began in 1831. The town is named after William Gisborne who was the Colonial
Secretary in 1879. Gisborne is one of the few places in New Zealand where Maori cultural traditions
are still evident in the day-to-day activities of the people, and where the Maori language is a part
of everyday life. Accommodation in Gisborne is plentiful, giving you a choice of options; luxury
villas, exclusive hideaways, hotels, self-catering motels and lodges (some with a restaurant),
holiday parks with tourist flats, budget accommodation in cabins, campervan and campsites. Seasonal
discounts may apply, pet friendly accommodation is available in Gisborne by arrangement.
