If
you're visiting Golden Bay, your first stop should be the
information centre. This will enable you to pick up all the information
that you need to get the most out of your trip.
i-SITES are New
Zealand's official visitor centres, and there are over 80 of them
throughout the country. Aside from i-SITES, there are also information
centres in most towns and even in small settlements.
The friendly
staff at the information centres can help you find accommodation, plan
tours and activities, and give you that local insight that makes all the
difference. Most bookings can be made here for you, and you can pick up
maps and brochures to help you plan your visit. These centres also
sometimes have souvenirs for sale and internet access.
Golden Bay is a vibrant, unforgettable part of Nelson region. The spectacular drive over Takaka Hill
winds through a granite and marble landscape, and the views from the top are spectacular. Golden Bay
is also connected to the rest of Nelson by the Abel Tasman Coastal Track. It is a landscape fairly
caught between an idyllic unspoiled coastline and the massive wilderness that is Kahurangi National
Park. Kahurangi is mostly rugged country and a nature lover's delight. There are good tracks,
including the popular Heaphy Track through to Karamea on the West Coast, and the Wangapeka. Natural
features of Golden Bay include the crystal clear freshwater springs (reputed to be the world's
clearest) at Te Waikoropupu (Pupu) Springs and Farewell Spit, the northern-most tip of the South
Island. 4WD tours to Farewell Spit depart daily from Collingwood. Throughout Golden Bay there are
also cafes and entertainment venues of style and character and numerous art outlets. Catch your own
salmon at Anatoki Salmon and have it prepared on site.
