Taking advantage of
Greymouth's backpacker options is a great way to socialise
before moving on and exploring the entire country on a budget. Backpacker
accommodation is friendly, communal and reliable. They are places where,
usually, young travellers congregate and often make friends with people
of different nationalities. It's the most fun way to discover everything
this country has to offer and meet like-minded travellers. New Zealand
backpacker accommodation is considered to be of a consistently high
quality. Most backpacker accommodation throughout the country offers a
mixture of shared rooms (dormitories), as well as single, twin or double
rooms for a higher (but still relatively cheap) cost. The facilities
usually consist of a communal kitchen and bathroom, and a coin-operated
laundry, although this does vary - many also have internet access, bars
and TV lounges. Long-term rates are usually offered for those planning to
stay awhile.
Gold was discovered on the West Coast in the 1860s and Greymouth still has plenty of gold-town
character. One of the world's great rail journeys, the TranzAlpine, travels across the Southern Alps
between Greymouth and Christchurch. The alpine scenery is spectacular. Hotels, self-catering motels,
lodges, motor inns and bed & breakfasts are only part of the accommodation offered in Greymouth. A
youth hostel, backpacker lodges, and holiday parks with self-catering motels, budget accommodation,
and campervan/campsites complete the picture.
