Motel accommodation is great for independent travellers. If you like to have the option of cooking your own meals, doing your own laundry and having the essential comforts of a home while staying in Haast, motels are the best form of accommodation. There is a huge variety of motels all around the country, from the top of the North Island to Stewart Island, and a range of prices to suit most budgets. You'll find motels in main cities, along main travelling routes and near popular tourist attractions, as well as in off-the-beaten-track scenic locations. Most motel units have self-catering facilities with fully equipped kitchens. They also have a phone, TV, tea and coffee-making facilities and a private bathroom. They have made-up beds with all bedding supplied, and car parking. Breakfast (at an additional cost) can usually be ordered the previous night for delivery to the unit if required.
The scenic road over Haast Pass, the southern gateway to the West Coast, is one of the most beautiful in the country. The journey offers a variable landscape of rainforest, wetlands, lakes, glacier-fed rivers and white-water rapids.
When you reach Haast, you will find three small settlements - Haast Junction, Haast Beach and Haast itself - each with its own frontier town atmosphere, where you can sense a way of life from an earlier age.
Haast's attractions are mostly outdoors: fishing, hunting, hiking, nature tours, scenic flights, river safaris and jet boat rides. The area is also a haven for bird-watchers with fantail, tui, bellbird, pigeon, silvereye, grey warbler, kaka and kiwi, to name just some, all located in the abundant lowland forests.
Another of Haast's attractions is its easy access to pristine rainforest, lagoons and long stretches of wilderness coast, including the historical Jackson Bay. Here you can view the fur seals and penguins.
Make sure you stop at one of the short walks that are well sign-posted along SH 6. One of the best is just north of Makarora, located within the World Heritage-listed Mount Aspiring National Park. This is the Blue Pools Walk, which has become world-renowned as a must-do. It features a gravel path and boardwalks that wind through a native silver beech forest and lead to a swing-bridge high above the Makarora River - the views back to the mountains of the Main Divide are breathtaking. The track continues deep into the forest to a series of deep azure blue pools, the water so clear that you can see right to the bottom.
The first commercial flight in New Zealand was into Haast by pilot Bert Mercer in 1934. Flying a DH83 Fox Moth, Mercer started in Hokitika and landed on Haast Beach.
The Haast Pass (Tioripatea) Highway was opened in 1965, the scenic 140km road creating a vital road link between Wanaka and Haast.
In 1990, 2.6 million ha of southwest New Zealand was declared a World Heritage Area (known to Maori as Te Wahipounamu, the place of the greenstone). This gave international recognition to the area's outstanding natural features.
There is a wide range of accommodation from which to choose; a hotel and a resort, self-catering lodges and motels, backpackers, youth hostel and holiday parks with budget accommodation, campervan and campsites. Group discounts may be available at some establishments.
