This twisting and beautiful harbour includes the beach resorts of Omapere and Opononi. Further up
the harbour are the history-filled towns of Rawene, Kohukohu and Horeke, New Zealand's second-oldest
European settlement - there is now no town called Hokianga. Swimming, fishing, sailing, kayaking and
cruising are all popular pastimes on the harbour. There are many bush and coastal walks in the area.
The region is a haven for art and craft-type people, who take their inspiration from their
surroundings. A vehicle ferry crosses the harbour at Rawene. There are majestic kauri forests at
Puketi in the north and Waipoua, a few minutes' drive to the south. A range of cafes and restaurants
are available in and around the various settlements.
