and eco-tourism adventures to cruises and jet-boat rides.

is the 'Adventure Capital of the World', so adrenalin-pumping action is
found all over the country. Jet boating and white-water rafting are
exhilarating ways to check out the country's crystal-clear rivers and
magic scenery. If you would rather stay dry then there's a myriad of
land and air-based activities on offer too. The brave can try bungy
jumping, the slightly less courageous can enjoy a tandem hang-glide or
parapent, or for the ultimate thrill there is the free-fall skydive.
Plus, abseiling or exploring the captivating cave systems that riddle
both the North and South Islands should definitely be on your to-do list.
Kaikoura is world-renowned as the whale-watching centre of New Zealand, with tours available both by
boat and air to view the giant sperm whales, dolphins, fur seals and royal albatrosses. With
wetsuits provided, visitors can swim with pods of dusky dolphins, come face-to-face with fur seals,
or scuba dive. On land, activities include 4WD motorbiking, horse trekking, Maori culture tours,
skiing at Mount Lyford just one hour away, farm tours, bird watching and cave tours.
Of particular
note is a survivor of Kaikoura's whaling days - Fyffe House - built in the 1850s. It is the town's
oldest building and is now owned by the Historic Places Trust. Open five days a week May-October and
seven days November-April. It is en route to the seal colony. Local arts and crafts galleries
display a high standard of creativity and design by Kaikoura artists.
