Eating out can be one of the highlights of a holiday in Kaikoura. You can expect to find wonderful examples of edible excellence throughout the country, and the high standard of food offered by cafes and restaurants can be attributed to an unlimited supply of fresh, quality ingredients. The cuisine style known as Pacific Rim is New Zealand's point of difference. Pacific Rim blends the flavours of South East Asia, the Pacific and Japan. Seafood, the traditional Maori hangi (an earth oven), fresh fruit and locally produced venison and beef are just a selection of the must-try cuisine on offer. Combine this with world-class locally made wines and you have a memorable dining experience.

Kaikoura is world-renowned as the whale-watching centre of New Zealand, with tours available both by
boat and air to view the giant sperm whales, dolphins, fur seals and royal albatrosses. With
wetsuits provided, visitors can swim with pods of dusky dolphins, come face-to-face with fur seals,
or scuba dive. On land, activities include 4WD motorbiking, horse trekking, Maori culture tours,
skiing at Mount Lyford just one hour away, farm tours, bird watching and cave tours. Of particular
note is a survivor of Kaikoura's whaling days - Fyffe House - built in the 1850s. It is the town's
oldest building and is now owned by the Historic Places Trust. Open five days a week May-October and
seven days November-April. It is en route to the seal colony. Local arts and crafts galleries
display a high standard of creativity and design by Kaikoura artists.
