With wetsuits provided, visitors can swim with pods of dusky dolphins, come face-to-face with fur seals, or scuba dive. On land, activities include 4WD motorbiking, horse trekking, Maori culture tours, skiing at Mount Lyford just one hour away, farm tours, bird watching and cave tours. Of particular note is a survivor of Kaikoura’s whaling days – Fyffe House – built in the 1850s. It is the town’s oldest building and is now owned by the Historic Places Trust. Open five days a week May-October and seven days November-April. It is en route to the seal colony. Local arts and crafts galleries display a high standard of creativity and design by Kaikoura artists.
