The smallest of Otago's three alpine glacier lakes, Lake Hawea is separated from shallower
neighbour, Lake Wanaka, by a narrow isthmus. Lake Hawea was raised 20m to act as a storage lake for
the Clutha hydroelectric schemes. Lake Hawea has pleasant picnic areas and bushwalks, and is popular
for fishing in summer. Activities include boating, camping, canoeing, trout and salmon fishing,
horse riding, hunting, picnicking, water-skiing, and windsurfing. The aptly named Mount Grandview is
nearby.
