This small alpine village at the northwestern tip of the district retains its pristine alpine beauty and tranquillity and is a 24km drive off the main road. Some of the highest peaks in the Southern Alps including Aoraki Mt Cook and Glen Mary Glacier can be seen from its deep lake and rugged terrain. Surrounding sheep stations have been immortalised in literature and are so extensive there are few fences. Ohau ski field is nearby with supporting accommodation and facilities.
