Holiday parks in
Lake Taupo are great places for family holidays that won't break
the bank. Holiday parks are found in picturesque spots, particularly near
popular attractions. It's not all about just pitching a tent anymore;
most holiday parks have a whole range of accommodation options if camping
isn't your style. Holiday parks are also social spots, with communal
facilities meaning there are plenty of opportunities to mix with other
holidaymakers. Accommodation usually ranges from tent sites and on-site
caravans to park motels and self-contained cabins, which are basically
the same as a motel unit. Holiday parks usually have shared facilities
for showers, toilets, cooking and laundry, and many have recreational
facilities such as playgrounds, TV and games rooms and a swimming or spa
pool. For campervans and mobile homes, these parks offer security and
protection for overnight stays.
Lake Taupo is the result of a tremendous volcanic eruption in AD186. The Waikato River forms the
outflow for Lake Taupo, and water sports are major activities in the area. The lake is well stocked
with trout - licences can be obtained from the Department of Conservation or sporting goods stores.
Thermal areas are found nearby at Wairakei on the edge of Lake Taupo, and at the southern end of the
lake at Tokaanu.
With three national parks, Ruapehu is a natural magnet for adventurous
travellers. The Volcanic Plateau of the central North Island includes the Tongariro National Park,
which has three active volcanoes; Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. Rivers and huge volcanic cones
provide scope for kayaking, canoeing, hiking, climbing and skiing. The park has many walking tracks
and the popular ski fields of Whakapapa, Turoa and Tukino. Hunters will find plenty to keep them
busy, hunting for feral deer, pigs, goats, rabbits and possums.
