Thermal areas are found nearby at Wairakei on the edge of Lake Taupo, and at the southern end of the lake at Tokaanu. With three national parks, Ruapehu is a natural magnet for adventurous travellers. The Volcanic Plateau of the central North Island includes the Tongariro National Park, which has three active volcanoes; Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. Rivers and huge volcanic cones provide scope for kayaking, canoeing, hiking, climbing and skiing. The park has many walking tracks and the popular ski fields of Whakapapa, Turoa and Tukino. Hunters will find plenty to keep them busy, hunting for feral deer, pigs, goats, rabbits and possums.
