Town Info

Lake Tekapo Motels (Self-Contained) - Accommodation. If you are looking for comprehensive travel information for Lake Tekapo Motels (Self-Contained) including Cottages, Motel and Motor Lodge, you will find it here on AA Travel.

Motel accommodation is great for independent travellers. If you like to have the option of cooking your own meals, doing your own laundry and having the essential comforts of a home while staying in Lake Tekapo, motels are the best form of accommodation. There is a huge variety of motels all around the country, from the top of the North Island to Stewart Island, and a range of prices to suit most budgets. You'll find motels in main cities, along main travelling routes and near popular tourist attractions, as well as in off-the-beaten-track scenic locations. Most motel units have self-catering facilities with fully equipped kitchens. They also have a phone, TV, tea and coffee-making facilities and a private bathroom. They have made-up beds with all bedding supplied, and car parking. Breakfast (at an additional cost) can usually be ordered the previous night for delivery to the unit if required.

Surrounded by a vast basin of golden tussock, the Lake Tekapo settlement sits 710 metres above sea level and represents the heart of the Mackenzie District. If you're wondering what gives the lake its beautiful, opaque turquoise colour, it's the finely ground rock particles contained in the glacial waters that feed the lake.

Lake Tekapo's scenery is breathtaking - it's the combination of the turquoise lake, the exquisite Church of the Good Shepherd, snow-capped Southern Alps, and the clear air, which is reputed to be the clearest air in the southern hemisphere. If you have any doubts, check out the unforgettable night sky.
The Church of the Good Shepherd on the edge of the lake is possibly the most photographed church in New Zealand. Its altar window looks directly north over the lake to the Godley Glaciers.

The famous sheep dog statue nearby represents an important facet of this part of New Zealand. The memorial is to the working dog "without the help of which the grazing of this mountainous country would be impossible".

Lake Tekapo is a ski resort in winter (Roundhill skifield is 20 minutes away) and an aquatic playground in summer.

As well as generating hydro-electric power, the waters of the lake accommodate canoe treks, ice skating, jet-boating, yachting and fishing. Recreation has always been an important part of the township and hiking and walking, cycling, golf, fishing are also popular attractions.

The great mass of solid rock that overlooks the town, Mount John, provides shelter for a camping ground, an ice-skating rink and a boat ramp for fishing and waterskiing. Climb to the summit for 360-degree views of the lakes and mountains. It is here you'll find the Mount John Earth & Sky Observatory. This site was chosen in the early 1960s because of the high number of clear nights and its remoteness from bright lights, amongst other reasons. Explore the Milky Way, Southern Cross and distant planets with powerful telescopes on an evening Star-watching Tour.

You will have a great choice of accommodation in Lake Tekapo, from luxury to budget, resorts and self-catering motels, youth hostels, bed & breakfasts to holiday parks and motor camps.
