The wild and majestic Marlborough Sounds are jewels in the crown of Marlborough. Comprising three
main waterways of Queen Charlotte Sound, Pelorus Sound, and Kenepuru Sound, the recreational
opportunities this area offers are boundless. The maze of secluded inlets and coves is a system of
submerged river valleys and islands that stem from the major inlets of Queen Charlotte and Pelorus
Sounds. It provides an ideal environment for sailing, fishing, diving, sea kayaking and viewing
marine life, including dolphins. Viewing marine life, mussel and salmon farms is popular in the
Sounds, and cruises are available. The award-winning Queen Charlotte Track begins at historic Ship
Cove in the outer Queen Charlotte Sound and ends at Anakiwa (home of the renowned Cobham Outward
Bound outdoor recreation school).
