bubbling mud pools, while our incredible wildlife is a must-see for
animal lovers. There are plenty of picturesque beaches for swimming,

lakes for fishing and water sports, and native forests for exploring. Try
delicious gourmet delights, visit an art or craft studio, go shopping,
check out a Maori cultural performance or take advantage of our exciting
range of events. And that's just the beginning!
Milford Sound, the most accessible Sound, and the best known of the glacier-cut fiords, is most
beautiful at dawn. Mitre Peak, seen to rise dramatically out of the water to a steep point from the
land, is revealed as part of a chain of peaks when seen from the water. Hanging valleys carry fresh
water through the rainforest and into the sea in majestic waterfalls. The rainfall here is the
highest in New Zealand (typically over 6000mm annually). Some of the varied wildlife includes the
Fiordland crested penguin, the little blue penguin, New Zealand fur seals and bottlenose dolphins,
which sometimes play around launches in the Sound. The underwater observatory (reached by launch) in
Harrison's Cove reveals the wonder of marine life in Milford Sound. Access to Milford is by the
Milford Road, by air, or along the Milford Track. Insect repellent and a raincoat are essential
equipment. Daytime and overnight cruises, kayaking and scenic flights are popular. Bowen Falls and
the Lookout are among the many beautiful natural features.
