Mount Somers Backpackers - Accommodation. If you are looking for comprehensive travel information for Mount Somers Backpackers , you will find it here on AA Travel.
Taking advantage of Mount Somers's backpacker options is a great way to socialise before moving on and exploring the entire country on a budget. Backpacker accommodation is friendly, communal and reliable. They are places where, usually, young travellers congregate and often make friends with people of different nationalities. It's the most fun way to discover everything this country has to offer and meet like-minded travellers. New Zealand backpacker accommodation is considered to be of a consistently high quality. Most backpacker accommodation throughout the country offers a mixture of shared rooms (dormitories), as well as single, twin or double rooms for a higher (but still relatively cheap) cost. The facilities usually consist of a communal kitchen and bathroom, and a coin-operated laundry, although this does vary - many also have internet access, bars and TV lounges. Long-term rates are usually offered for those planning to stay awhile.
Biking and walking are just two reasons to stay at Mount Somers, 40km west of Ashburton.
The main attraction of the area is the Mount Somers Subalpine Walkway, a 17km hike linking Woolshed Creek and Sharplin Falls. Features on the walkway include historic coal mines, volcanic formations, tussock lands, a deep river canyon and rugged bush country.
For those who like fly fishing in solitude you can't get a more isolated spot than Lakes Emma and Roundabout in the high country, which can only be accessed by 4WD along the Hakatere-Potts Road. Most of the rivers in the region are also abundant with trout.
A little farther on is Lake Clearwater, which is biggest lake in the area. Here you can go windsurfing, sailing, rowing and fishing. Both Lake Clearwater and the more northern Lake Heron are refuges for birds such as the rare great crested grebe, yellowhead, wrybill, black-fronted tern and banded dotterel, which make the lakes popular with bird-watchers.
Movie history can be seen if you visit Mount Sunday - a stand-alone peak in the middle of a plain, which is surrounded by mountains. It is no wonder Peter Jackson chose Mount Sunday as the location for Edoras, home of the Rohan Riders in his Lord of the Rings trilogy. Although the set of Edoras has long since gone, the views from the mountain are breathtaking.
In April, the region hosts the Mount Somers Classic Mountain Bike Race. A rare opportunity presents itself for those who love this sport in that most of the race is held on private land that is not open to the public at any other time of the year. Racers ride through a variety of topography including snow grass, farm tracks, bush and limeworks.
The holiday park offers self-catering accommodation, campervan and campsites, with facilities for groups. Pet friendly accommodation is available by arrangement.
