At the confluence of the Buller and Matakitaki Rivers, Murchison is the only sizeable settlement in
the Buller region before the Buller Gorge and the West Coast. The mighty Buller River and its
tributaries offer superb trout fishing, as well as some of the best white-water kayaking, jet
boating and rafting in the country. Buller Gorge is also home to New Zealand's longest swingbridge.
