Taking advantage of
Napier's backpacker options is a great way to socialise
before moving on and exploring the entire country on a budget. Backpacker
accommodation is friendly, communal and reliable. They are places where,
usually, young travellers congregate and often make friends with people
of different nationalities. It's the most fun way to discover everything
this country has to offer and meet like-minded travellers. New Zealand
backpacker accommodation is considered to be of a consistently high
quality. Most backpacker accommodation throughout the country offers a
mixture of shared rooms (dormitories), as well as single, twin or double
rooms for a higher (but still relatively cheap) cost. The facilities
usually consist of a communal kitchen and bathroom, and a coin-operated
laundry, although this does vary - many also have internet access, bars
and TV lounges. Long-term rates are usually offered for those planning to
stay awhile.
Napier: In 1931 a massive earthquake (7.8 on the Richter scale) nearly obliterated the city of Napier. As a result, many buildings were demolished and rebuilt in the architectural style of the times - Art Deco, Spanish Mission and Stripped Classical. Today Napier has one of the most outstanding collections of 1930s architecture in the world - influenced heavily by Frank Lloyd Wright and the Chicago School. The Art Deco Walk is a permanent attraction, and each February Napier hosts an Art Deco Weekend - a not-too-serious celebration of the 1930s. Napier has a busy port and large amounts of frozen meat, wool, pulp and timber are shipped from here. There are many cafes within walking distance of Napier's central city area and a walk along Marine Parade where there are many amusements (a marine park, mini-golf, swimming pools, roller blading, bumper boats and miniature racing cars) is a pleasant way to start or end the day. Napier's iconic statue 'Pania of the Reef' is sometimes compared to Copenhagen's Little Mermaid. Accommodation is abundant in Napier and the surrounding area and ranges from luxury to budget; hotels, self-catering apartments, motels and lodges (some with restaurants), homestay; holiday parks and motor camps with self-catering units, budget cabins and campsites. There is also a beachfront youth hostel for backpackers. Families and groups welcome at most establishments; seasonal and group discounts may apply.
