Town Info

Holiday parks in Orakei Korako are great for family holidays that won't break the bank. You don't have to pitch a tent either; most holiday parks have a range of accommodation if camping isn't your style. Accommodation usually ranges from tent sites and on-site caravans to motels and self-contained cabins.

Orakei Korako is known as 'the hidden valley', which sums up the area perfectly.

Just 25 minutes north of Taupo and 45 minutes south of Roturua, Orakei Korako is like a different world with its chaotic geothermal activity.

The area was originally occupied by the people of Ngati Tuwharetoa, the local Maori tribe. People came across the country to make use of the hot springs, where they cook their food and bathe.

Today Orakei Korako is one of New Zealand's top tourist attractions. It has more active geysers than any other geothermal field in the country, and its silica terraces are reported to be the largest in the world. The powerful geysers, boiling mud pools, hot springs and mud volcanoes will astound you.

A boat takes visitors across the lake to the geyser valley and caves (the majestic Ruatapu Caves are not to be missed). Afterwards relax by the stunning Waikato River with a coffee or enjoy lunch at the on-site cafe.
