The Otago Peninsula stretches east along the southern edge of Dunedin's harbour and is home to
several internationally renowned wildlife reserves. Some of the world's most rare birds can be
viewed year round in their natural habitats, including the only royal albatross-breeding colony on a
mainland. Nearby colonies of the rare yellow-eyed penguin can be found, with secluded beaches
frequented by fur seals and sea lions and also nesting grounds of the white-fronted tern, blue
penguin and many shag species. Unspoilt natural habitats can be seen on land via guided tours and
guided cruises on Otago Harbour. Between December and April, visitors can fish for quinnat salmon.
